Shady Urban Front Garden

Here are some photos of a front garden I designed in 2014. If you have a shady front garden and want some structure to show off your plants, I hope this gives you some useful ideas.

My client wanted a straight-lined scheme, to go with the house front, in tiers of raised beds. It’s north-facing, but the third of the garden near the road gets sun. There’s also a tree in a neighbour’s garden which shades some of the garden.

I submitted some options, mostly based on modern art, and the chosen option was built and planted up. The last photos were taken in January, 2019, showing the effect of evergreens and other plants with winter interest.
